Position Focus:

Reporting to the Associate Director, Bibliographic Description Unit, the Assistant Director, Bibliographic Description Unit supports the vision and direction-setting for special collections bibliographic description and leadership of the Bibliographic Description Unit. The Bibliographic Description Unit is a division in Special Collections Technical Services, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. The unit is responsible for bibliographic description and stewardship interventions for single item and small collections in all formats.

With the Associate Director, the Assistant Director creates and maintains strategies and policies to ensure the discovery and sustainable stewardship of special collections bibliographic materials; assists with the evaluation and development of workflows and procedures, establishment of metrics, and contributes to reporting; and participates in unit and departmental planning. The Assistant Director helps foster a supportive and collaborative work culture and plays an important role in team building; participates in recruitment, managing, training, developing, and directly supervising unit staff; and identifies and engages in collaborative opportunities and build partnerships within the department, across the Library and profession to meet the strategic directions of the department, Library, and University. The Assistant Director may also establish and maintain relationships with vendors.

Within the unit, the Assistant Director leads and manages a copy cataloging team for material acquired by the Beinecke Library; serves as metadata liaison to the Black Bibliography Project, including supervising a Catalog/Metadata Librarian; and leads and manages special projects staff for the Bibliographic Description Unit. The Assistant Director leads and manages the Bibliographic Description unit when the Associate Director is absent. The Assistant Director manages projects and participates in University Library committees and task forces, especially as these relate to the needs of special collections at Yale; participates in regional, national, and international professional activities both to contribute to the profession and to grow individually as a professional librarian.

Essential Duties:

  1. Under the general direction of the Associate Director of the Bibliographic Description Unit, manages all aspects of cataloging library materials in all formats.
  2. Provides leadership and vision for the copy-cataloging team.
  3. Sets policies, procedures, and priorities for the copy-cataloging team.
  4. Leads multiple projects while meeting deadlines.
  5. Manages staff including training, setting priorities, and staff development.
  6. Collaborates with other librarians and libraries at Yale.
  7. Promotes the use of current and emerging technologies.
  8. Works independently with varied user groups in a complex organization, and functions collaboratively in a team environment.
  9. Serves on Library and University committees.
  10. Participates in professional activities outside of Yale and monitors developments and best practices elsewhere to encourage innovation and ensure the excellence of the Library.

 

Required Education and Experience:

Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and direction in a research library. Demonstrated ability and achievement in managing staff. Demonstrated ability with integrated library system and electronic resource management. Demonstrated ability cataloging a variety of library materials in all formats. Demonstrated excellent oral and written communications and analytical ability. Demonstrated technical aptitude with strong analytical skills and excellent attention to detail. Demonstrated excellent customer service skills, flexibility and a strong commitment to innovation, creativity and excellence. Demonstrated problem solving skills, experience coordinating projects, and the ability to bring projects to fruition. Demonstrated experience working collaboratively and independently with various groups within a complex organization and rapidly changing team environment.

 

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Five years of professional experience.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated knowledge and ability with bibliographic standards and metadata, databases, and library management systems. Demonstrated ability cataloging using AACR2/RDA, DCRM, and MARC.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated ability supervising or directing the efforts of a high performing team and training staff. Strong people-centered leadership and team management ability. Strong change management and facilitation skills to help staff navigate evolving workflows and systems.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Excellent analytical skills. Demonstrated ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and complete tasks and projects on time.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Excellent communication skills. Ability to explain technical services processes and issues to non-specialist audiences.

 

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Experience cataloging rare or special collections materials. Demonstrated knowledge of American or European history or literature. Strong bibliographic knowledge of ancient or modern European languages. Familiarity with linked data concepts and/or applications. Demonstrated knowledge of search and discovery, user experience and/or assessment for special collections.
