Job Summary:

The Research Success Librarian provides leadership for walk-in and virtual reference and research services. This position is critical to advancing the University’s and Libraries’ strategic plan, particularly related to student success. Additionally, the Research Success Librarian will engage with students, faculty, staff, and the community to enable excellence in learning, research, scholarship, and teaching. This position reports to the Director for Research Services.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  1. Reflects the Libraries’ Guiding Principles in partnership with and service to the university:
  • Provides leadership for developing, managing, and evaluating walk-in and virtual reference and research services for University Libraries.
  • Develops a peer-to-peer appointment-based research consultation service.
  • Provides vision for the walk-in reference and research service model to include promotion of the Libraries’ varied services, resources, and partnerships to meet student and faculty needs.
  • Coordinates virtual reference and research services, which includes collaboration with the Springshare LibChat consortium.
  • Identifies, shares, and trains Libraries staff on new tools and capabilities in reference and research resources.
  • Manages, develops, and revises online research tools including LibGuides, video tutorials, and other digital learning objects for library-wide use.
  • Manages and mentors one full-time staff Coordinator and a portion of 15-20 student employees and interns who provide support for walk-in and virtual reference and research services.
  • Develops and manages the departmental student budget.
  • Develops a quality excellence program using assessment data, evidence-based library practice, and iterative design principles for continual service model improvement.
  • Collaborates across departments to maintain consistent communication and integrated services.

 

  1. Serves as library liaison to academic department(s):
  • Collaborates to create and deliver curricula; offer teaching and learning experiences that integrate active learning strategies; develops and shares disciplinary expertise across multiple literacies to best meet learning and professional growth outcomes for students.
  • Discovers and promotes access to institutional scholarly, research data, and other creative content through faculty excellence, student success, and open scholarship initiatives.
  • Collaborates in the design, implementation, and maintenance of relevant online tools and services in order to place the Libraries into the flow of teaching, learning, and research.

 

  1. Advance departmental, Libraries’, and university goals:
  • Be an advocate and ally for equity, diversity, justice, and inclusion.
  • Participate in committees and task forces within the Libraries, university, and the profession.
  • Identify and integrate best practices in service, teaching and learning, and scholarly activity.
  • Foster an environment of continual professional development, improvement, and learning.
  • Continuously assess and iterate programs to improve services and advance initiatives.
  • Demonstrate commitment to innovation and discovery in order to remain relevant in higher education and support others in doing so as well.

 

  1. Performs other duties as assigned

  

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library and/or information science from an ALA-accredited program or a related graduate degree
  • One (1) to three (3) years of professional experience providing reference and research services in a library

  • Experience managing reference or research services in a library
  • Library instruction experience or other teaching experience
  • Supervisory experience

  • Ability to communicate effectively including both verbal and written skills.
  • Model and mentoring student employees in the development of their interpersonal skills.
  • Expertise in teaching, both in person and online.
  • Developing instructional competencies in others who provide reference and research support.
  • Experience managing busy in-person and online service points.
  • Commitment to developing professional knowledge and skills on a continuing basis.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity, and to serving the needs of a culturally and educationally diverse and inclusive community.
  • Ability to foster a positive working environment and model the Libraries’ Guiding Principles through daily actions and behaviors.
