The University of Delaware Library, Museums and Press seeks an early career librarian with an interest in open education, open access, and publishing. Working closely with colleagues who advocate for open educational resources (OER) in the Library, Museums and Press and across the University, the Pauline A. Young Resident will have the opportunity to lead efforts to develop sustainable workflows around OER publishing. Interest in OER has been growing at the University of Delaware. The University’s Strategic Plan specifically mentions the need to expand the use of and access to OER to help reduce students’ costs. The Library also offers yearly grants to faculty to support the adoption of open and affordable course materials. We have supported dozens of projects across academic departments, and have saved students nearly half a million dollars in materials costs. We are excited to further support open publishing as a next step in this work.
Reporting to the Head, Digital Initiatives and Preservation (DIP), the Resident will be able to learn from a diverse team committed to providing support to students, faculty and staff in teaching and scholarly research. DIP handles a range of types of work, including digitizing and preserving collections materials for research and teaching; and helping students, faculty, and staff navigate questions about digital publishing. Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) values are inherently high priorities for DIP. The department contributes to the social justice goals of the Library, Museums and Press by prioritizing projects that center and give voice to marginalized or excluded communities. Other important collaborators with this position include the University of Delaware Press and the Learning, Engagement, and Curricular Support Division.
The Resident will have the opportunity to participate in the following activities:
Assess faculty needs around publishing OER
Build partnerships with others who advocate for OER in the Library, Museums and Press and across the University
Serve as a member of the Open and Affordable Teaching Materials Working Group
Lead workshops and present to campus stakeholders on OER, open access, publishing, and copyright, both collaboratively and individually
Collaborate with faculty and liaison librarians to publish and disseminate locally produced OER, serving as the project manager on publications
Create appropriate documentation/outreach materials to support OER publishing efforts
Develop recommendations to help the Library, Museums and Press OER program continue to grow and be successful
The Pauline A. Young Residency is a three-year appointment offering professional experience in an academic research library to recent graduates of a library/information science program. The purpose of the residency is to encourage the involvement of individuals from under-represented groups in academic librarianship. Started in 1984, the Pauline A. Young Residency is among the Library's most successful efforts to advance equity, diversity and inclusion. The residency is designed to meet both the professional goals and interests of the Resident as well as the service and operational priorities of the Library and to that end, the resident will participate in developing goals for the residency according to their professional interests. The purpose of the residency is to encourage the involvement of individuals from under-represented groups in academic librarianship.
Recent graduate degree in library science.
Interest in or demonstrated knowledge of open educational resources, practices, and trends as demonstrated by professional experience or coursework.
Ability to develop and maintain effective team-based working relationships
Ability to learn new tools, skills, and software as needed to support the development of OER.
Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
