This Library Technician (within the Cataloging and Metadata Department) is responsible for the new print materials for The Latin American Library received from the Acquisitions Department. This position prepares electronic files of bibliographic records pulled from Alma, emails the files to the outsourcing vendor, receives the files back, and loads the records back into Alma. This position performs copy cataloging of print monographs, primarily in Spanish, using OCLC and Alma.


Function: Oversight of LAL Materials for Cataloging and Outsourcing

  • Verifies and maintains new materials for The Latin American Library received from acquisitions into Cataloging and Metadata Department
  • Prepares e-files of LAL materials for outsourced vendor using local guidelines and emails to vendor monthly
  • Reviews and edits e-files returned from vendor for loading into Alma using local guidelines
  • With the assistance of student workers, pulls materials from shelves, sends for processing, and shifts new materials on shelves

Function: Copy Cataloging

  • Copy catalogs print monographs, primarily for The Latin American Library, following local procedures, using OCLC and Alma
  • Adds or updates authority records appropriately
  • Updates holdings records, creates item records, and prepares the item for processing

Required Education and/or Experience
• Bachelor’s Degree
• High School Diploma (or Equivalent) with 6 years of library experience
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Fluent in reading Spanish and/or Portuguese.
• Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Excel or other spreadsheet software.
• Ability to learn varied computer programs and systems such as OCLC, MARCEdit, Alma, etc.
• Ability to communicate effectively with vendors and library personnel.
• Ability to prioritize, organize and manage multiple projects with varying timelines.
• Ability to follow local procedures and pay close attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with library personnel at all levels in the organization.

• Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment and adapt to changes in workflows and procedures.
• Ability to shelve library materials and push book trucks.
• Ability to sit and work for extended periods of time at a computer workstation.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience using cataloging tools and databases.
• Experience working with library cataloging in an online environment.
