This position reports to the Head of Special Collections and Archives and will help chart the library’s long-range plans for cataloging and metadata initiatives. The Metadata Librarian evaluates and implements existing and new content standards for continued resource access and discovery by providing organization and bibliographic control of library resources in all formats and all encoding levels with an emphasis on Special Collections materials.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Performs original and copy cataloging for cartographic materials in Special Collections.
2. Performs original and copy cataloging for Special Collections non-cartographic materials in all formats. Creates and maintains MARC records for archival collections to upload to OCLC; reviews non-MARC format archival finding aids to upload to Texas Archival Resources Online (TARO).
3. Leads discussion and training for new cataloging and metadata policy, best practices, and workflows.
4. Participates in cross functional campus or Library teams.
5. Performs other duties assigned.
• Master’s degree from an accredited institution or equivalent experience.
• Computer literate and technologically adept.
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite, specifically Outlook, Word, and Excel.
• Proficiency in Windows Operating System and file management.
• Master’s degree in library and/or information science from an ALA-accredited program or a related graduate degree.
• Experience in original cataloging of cartographic materials and primary resources and formats beyond monographs and serials.
• Experience with MARC and non-MARC metadata schema, such as Dublin Core, EAD, MARCXML.
• Experience with XML, linked data, and BIBFRAME.
• Experience with Alma, a Unified Resource Management system.
• Reading knowledge of two or more foreign languages, particularly Spanish, French, German, Italian and Latin.
