Humanities Librarian

Reed College seeks an innovative, forward-thinking, and service-oriented librarian to provide expertise in research methods, resources, and instruction for the humanities disciplines. In this position, you will support and collaborate with students and faculty engaged in research, inquiry, and coursework throughout the curriculum, from the foundational first-year humanities course to the required senior thesis.

This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt position reporting to the Director of Research Services. The starting salary for this position is $62,000-$64,000, depending on qualifications and experience.

  • You have experience or an academic degree in a humanities discipline (e.g., languages and literature, history, philosophy, religion, or related interdisciplinary programs).

  • You have experience in teaching using instructional design, lesson planning, and assessment practices.

  • Serve as primary liaison to assigned humanities subject areas and actively develop collaborative relationships with faculty and students in those departments.
  • Develop and deliver reference and instruction services; teach research tools and skills relevant to humanities disciplines.
  • Provide in-depth, specialized research consultations in support of the entire research lifecycle, including senior thesis.
  • Participate in coordinating library instruction for a first-year humanities course.
  • Develop and manage electronic and print collections to support the research and teaching needs of the community.
  • Partner with special collections and archives to promote and support teaching and research with primary evidence materials.
  • Engage with a dynamic community using both traditional research methods and emerging modes of scholarship and pedagogies.
  • Collaboratively develop and participate in library outreach and engagement programs.
  • Develop and maintain subject-based online research guides.


  • ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS or relevant advanced degree and minimum of 1 year of professional library experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Knowledge of technology and tools for research and teaching, including citation management and digital humanities.
  • Excellent communication, teaching, writing, and analytical skills.
