The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Libraries seeks an innovative and creative Director of Library Human Resources. Reporting to the University Librarian, the incumbent serves as a member of the library’s leadership team and administers the human resources programs (including recruitment, performance management, employee relations, diversity and inclusion related initiatives, and staff and organizational development) for approximately 310 employees and 350+ student employees in accordance with University policies and regulations. The Director develops programs that will aid staff members in enhancing the skills, abilities, and knowledge needed to be sought-after partners and effective employees and leaders. The Director formulates a vision and strategy to manage change and to prepare staff for new roles through staff development programming and training opportunities; works to recruit and retain a diverse workforce with the skills and expertise needed for new and emerging roles; engages in succession planning; and employs coaching, mentoring and leadership-development approaches to foster staff success and professional advancement. The Director leads efforts to cultivate and sustain a high performing organization by fostering a diverse and inclusive environment that values integrity, teamwork, clear and respectful communication, and problem solving. The Director stays abreast of current trends in human resource management and represents the University Libraries in various forums on the campus and beyond.
The Director of Library Human Resources supervises 3.5 FTE staff (http://library.unc.edu/hr/) whose primary responsibilities include staff recruitment and search committees, compensation, performance management, appointment and promotion, onboarding, orientation, personnel records management, student and temporary employment, data analysis and reporting, parking assignment, and Equal Opportunity Employment/Affirmative Action compliance.
- ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science or a relevant advanced degree
- A minimum of five years’ experience in human resources management or library experience with evidence of increasing responsibility in human resources
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with diverse groups
- Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; a strong commitment to service and teamwork; excellent judgment, organizational and analytical skills
- Commitment to professional growth and development of library staff
- Knowledge of HR regulations, state/federal employment laws and best practices; experience in leading HR functions such as employment/recruiting, compensation, and employee relations; experience in the interpretation of policy; experience in supervision, management, negotiation, and mediation; and commitment to the principles of staff training and development with the experience and demonstrated ability to plan, implement, and evaluate supporting programs.
- Strong and effective planning and leadership skills along with problem solving skills
- Must be detail oriented, flexible, and able to prioritize multiple projects
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, awareness, and understanding of diverse thought, cultures, race, religion, gender, and other differences
- Previous human resources work experience in an academic library or higher education setting
- Knowledge of North Carolina System policies and procedures as well as HR and Payroll data warehouses, such as PeopleSoft (Connect Carolina)
- Certification from Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), Professional in Human Resources (PHR), or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR)
- Experience leading efforts with local, regional, and national HR organizations such as CUPA-HR to stay abreast of current trends in Human Resources.

Salary and Benefits
This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Standard state benefits of annual leave, sick leave, and State or optional retirement plan.
