Description

The University of Virginia Library (UVA) seeks an experienced, collaborative and service-oriented library professional, with the ability to inspire others and think strategically, as the Director of Information Services & Spaces.  The successful candidate will lead an evolving service-oriented department that provides information services in-person and remotely including reference, reserves and circulation; manages multiple libraries; and contributes to creating welcoming and inclusive environments. In addition to administering service points and operations for UVA Library locations, the Director of Information Services & Spaces collaborates on services with Harrison-Small​ Special Collections Library, Health Sciences Library, Darden Business Library and Law Library.

The Director of Information Services & Spaces will join the UVA Library at an exciting and transformative time. The University has embarked on a major renovation at https://www.library.virginia.edu/renovation/ of UVA’s first and largest Library. The incoming Director will have a unique opportunity to immediately shape the service offerings across UVA libraries both during and after this renovation, slated to be completed by the end of fall 2023.

The Director of Information Services & Spaces reports to the Associate University Librarian for Research and Learning Services (RLS) and is part of the RLS leadership team. The position guides the activities of some 15 librarians and professional staff, as well as a large group of student workers, with additional staffing considerations as we move closer to reopening the newly renovated main library.

Specifically, the Director of Information Services and Spaces will

  • Provide leadership for circulation, reserves, reference and research assistance, and chat/text/email services.
  • Oversee operations for multiple library spaces and collaborate with other departments to provide excellent service at all locations.
  • Hire, train, evaluate and develop librarians and staff.
  • Continuously assess services, programs, and spaces, and strategically shape information services and service points to better serve students, faculty, researchers, and the wider UVA and Charlottesville community.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate service standards that encourage staff to exceed patron expectations.
  • Manage the department’s budget and administer an annual student/wage budget of over $300,000
  • Serve on local, university, and consortia committees as appropriate.
  • Contribute to professional organizations at local and national levels and participate in scholarship through presentations and/or publications.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree and at least 8 years of increasingly responsible experience in a library OR 12 years of related work experience, An ALA-accredited graduate degree or accredited graduate degree in another appropriate discipline may substitute for some experience.

  • Previous supervisory experience overseeing front line staff in a library.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, or a commitment to do so at UVA.
  • Commitment to and experience in evaluating and assessing programs, services, or patrons needs.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the evolving nature of higher education and of the patrons in a research university library.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in Information or Library Science from an ALA-accredited graduate degree or accredited graduate degree program.
  • Experience supervising multiple service points in an organization.
  • History of collaborative leadership with proven ability to work effectively with multiple stakeholders to build consensus.
  • Demonstrated interest in developing new service models and/or transforming existing services in an academic library.
  • Experience providing reference or research assistance in an academic library.
  • Experience providing front line service in a service industry or organization.
