Director of Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI)

The University of Iowa (UI) Libraries seeks to hire a Director of Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion (DEAI) who will provide leadership within the UI Libraries around all aspects of diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI) on workplace culture as well as services and collections. Reporting to the University Librarian (UL), the Director of DEAI ensures alignment with university and organizational core values and leads the implementation of the comprehensive Libraries’ DEAI Strategic Plan and manages the change process necessary to improve DEAI in the Libraries. The Director of DEAI seeks to help all people feel welcome and valued, and to ensure that employees of all backgrounds, beliefs, and abilities are able to come together for the common purpose of advancing the mission of the Libraries.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Serving as an expert liaison with the UL, AULs (Associate University Librarians), Libraries’ leadership groups (including the Executive Team, Leadership Team, and others) for matters related to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion, including policy development and implementation, and interpretation of University policies, processes, and procedures
- Leading as strategic advisor to the Libraries’ leadership team and provides consultation to administrators and library staff, groups, and units to increase awareness and accountability for diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in programs, services, and scholarship
- Chairing the Libraries Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Social Justice (IDEAS) Council formed to advance the Libraries’ comprehensive DEAI Strategic Plan, and represents the Council on the Leadership Team
- Sharing in Libraries-wide planning, policy development, and resource allocation as a member of the Leadership Team; contributes to the development of strategic initiatives; and employs evidence-based decision making
- Cultivating relationships with partners, professional associations, and peer institutions, and network to identify, develop, and implement leading practices that enable the Libraries to develop and retain highly qualified and diverse talent
- Representing the Libraries on the campus-level DEI Success Collaborative; collaborating with campus partners and units on responses to emerging local, national, or global events that affect the experience of students, faculty and/or staff from historically marginalized groups and populations; and stewarding relationships with communities and organizations on which the Libraries depend
- Partnering with related staff development activities in the Libraries and with campus partners to foster connections with Libraries’ expertise, services, and resources in developing training programs with a DEAI-focused curriculum for individual, organizational, and systems change, addressing topics such as: unconscious bias, anti-racism, microaggressions, social justice, and evidence based diversity best practices and behaviors that reinforce the diversity mission of the Libraries and the university
- Helps design a long-term DEAI staffing plan
- Serves as a member of the Residency Library Leadership Team
- Participates in national and global dialogues about professional practices in libraries/library science that help to enhance opportunities for underrepresented individuals to be aware of the library profession
- Collaborates with Libraries Human Resources and hiring authorities to integrate best practices into recruitment processes, selection, and onboarding for positions within the Libraries
- Contributes to the Libraries’ outreach and marketing activities to increase connections and standing as an important contributor to DEAI at the University of Iowa and beyond
- Establishes DEAI metrics and creates an assessment plan
- Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and related experience
- Demonstrated experience (typically 3-5 years) in supporting diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in a visible leadership role in a professional setting
- Demonstrated success and commitment to discussing, integrating, and promoting diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion through a complex and dynamic organization
- Proven ability to be a visionary change agent to transform, align, and inspire across all levels within an organization
- Demonstrated understanding of the intersectionality of difference, privilege, power, and other social justice dynamics for establishing and engaging ongoing collaborative communication structures with interdisciplinary partners across the organization that ensure an inclusive environment
- Demonstrated excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with experience in facilitation and presenting to groups
- Demonstrated ability to successfully plan, manage, and complete projects
- Experience (typically 3-5 years) in supporting diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in a visible leadership role in a professional setting with specific responsibilities for leading strategic projects and/or programs
- Experience working on DEAI initiatives in a higher education institution
- Experience translating data and analytics to develop insights, drive decision-making, and measure impact

The starting salary is $90,000 to commensurate with experience.
