The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Digital Special Collections Librarian, UNLV University Libraries [R0146506]

ROLE of the POSITION

As a member of the Digital Collections Department, lead the development, use, promotion, and support of the Special Collection and Archives' repository (Special Collections and Archives Portal) and the digital materials hosted there. The individual in this role will provide support to enhance discovery, access, management, and preservation of Special Collections and Archives assets within the Special Collections and Archives Portal and serves as the product manager for the repository software. This role reports to the Head of Digital Collections and connects multiple teams within the UNLV University Libraries to develop strategies and workflows that sustain and extend online access to our materials.

The Digital Special Collections and Archives Librarian is responsible for supporting and enhancing multiple workflows to deliver online access to Special Collections and Archives materials. The incumbent serves as liaison connecting multiple Libraries teams to sustain work in an efficient, accurate, high production digitization environment and is responsible for all aspects of collection preparation when material is prioritized for digitization. In consultation with the Head of Digital Collections and Special Collections and Archives Technical Services, they assess collections for digitization readiness and prepare digitization plans that take many factors into account, including available resources, research value, user or donor interests, physical processing needs, copyright and privacy, technical issues, etc.

This role includes regular consultation with the Division and other project team members to make decisions reflecting the values of UNLV University Libraries, specifically demonstrating a commitment to increased access to diverse and inclusive Special Collections and Archives materials in a user-focused digital library.

The primary mission of the Special Collections and Archives Division is to collect, preserve, provide discovery and access to, and promote, interpret, and instruct in the use of our materials.  Special Collections and Archives documents the history, culture, and physical environment of the city of Las Vegas, the Southern Nevada region, the global gaming industry, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Our collections include manuscripts, books, photographs, periodicals, maps, architectural drawings, oral history interviews, audiovisual materials, University archives, born-digital records, and other cultural artifacts. Significant collecting areas are: gaming and gambling; regional community groups and organizations; sexual entertainment and economies; Las Vegas entertainment and the arts; Las Vegas and urban resort architecture; mining and railroads; and Southern and Central Nevada history.

The division is comprised of three departments: Technical Services, Public Services, and Digital Collections. It also includes the Libraries’ preservation unit and conservation lab and the Oral History Research Center. Staff includes 8 academic faculty positions, 5 administrative faculty positions, 1 classified position, and multiple student and temporary positions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires an earned Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program and at least one year of experience in archives or libraries. Credentials must be obtained by the date of appointment.

  • One or more years of experience working with archival or cultural heritage materials and processes; grant projects and part time work are considered valuable experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with software development technologies and practices, especially related to open-source technologies used for archives and cultural heritage practices.
  • Demonstrated experience with digitization best practices, including work with creating robust online digital collections. Familiarity with researcher needs and use of digital collections and associated services.
  • Familiarity with web content standards, metadata standards, and file format specifications.
  • Ability to convey complex technical concepts to staff, faculty, and students regardless of technical background.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish partnerships and the ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team environment.
  • Competence and sensitivity in working with individuals who are highly diverse regarding many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, ability, income, level of educational attainment, and religion.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with Islandora, Drupal, and/or other repository open-source communities.
  • Demonstrated technical project leadership and/or project management certification
  • Knowledge of copyright, sharing, and use standards as they relate to repositories.
  • A robust understanding of the digital preservation life cycle, industry standards, and evolving best practices.
  • Experience writing and managing externally-funded projects.
  • Experience managing developers or technical staff.

SALARY

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Rank II, tenure-track) or Associate (Rank III, tenure-track/tenure).
