Located in downtown Denver, Colorado, the Auraria Campus is home to three institutions of higher education – University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and Community College of Denver – both MSU and CCD are Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI), and CU Denver is finalizing its HSI designation. The Auraria Library is excited to announce an opening for a full-time non-tenure Instructor faculty position, Associate Director for Collection Management and Discovery position.

The Associate Director is responsible for the development of the evolving vision and direction of the functions and services specifically related to the Collection Management and Discovery division. Responsibility of this area’s portfolio includes Collection Development and Strategies, Discovery Systems and Metadata, and Special and Digital Collections. The Associate Director also provides inclusive leadership through decision-making for library-wide planning, personnel decisions, budget allocation, resource management, organizational effectiveness, program and policy development, as part of the library’s Library Cabinet, and in collaboration with the Department Heads group.

The Associate Director demonstrates skill in collaborating with individuals and groups within and beyond the library, across the campus, and in the broader regional and library professional communities; has strong organizational skills; and the ability to work both independently and as a team leader and member. The individual in this role should possess experience managing academic personnel and have demonstrated collaborative team-building skills, including the ability to motivate and mentor others, and to support diverse ideas, cultures, and experiences.

Finally, the Associate Director should be committed to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace and will respond effectively to changing campus needs and priorities. This position reports to the Director and University Librarian.

 

Job Duties

 

  • Divisional and Library-wide Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (20%)

o Actively contribute to an inclusive, anti-racist, and equity-centered working and learning environment, as part of the Collection Management and Discovery Division as well as the library’s initiatives, programs, and policies.

o Model inclusive excellence through specific actions, policies, professional development, and practices that support the library’s diversity goals in the recruitment, hiring, and retention of diverse employees.

 

  • Strategic and Operational Administration (20%)

o Provide inclusive leadership through decision-making for library-wide planning, personnel decisions, budget allocation, resource management, organizational effectiveness, program and policy development as part of the Library Cabinet and in collaboration with the Department Heads group.

o Collaborate with Director to align the work of the division with library and campus strategic goals and directions.

o Ensure clear communication and project management workflows between Department Heads and Library Cabinet for projects and initiatives.

 

  • Organizational Leadership and Development (20%)

o Effectively navigate a continually changing environment through ongoing professional development, improvement, and learning.

o In collaboration with the Director and Department Heads, build community to maintain positive morale and effectively address interpersonal as well as organizational communication.

o Function as a liaison between the Library Cabinet and Department Heads. This includes taking proactive action to:

  • Foster an inclusive organizational culture that is built on trust, accountability, transparent communication, and decision-making.
  • Assist Department Heads to situate their work within a context of broader organizational priorities, challenges, and opportunities.

 

  • Divisional Leadership (40%)

o Define a continually evolving vision for the division which includes providing strategic direction for workflows, services, programming, projects, tools and identifying staffing, resource, and budget needs.

o Communicate division issues and needs (staffing/budget/resources) to the Library Cabinet.

o Ensure that all reports, direct and indirect, are successful in their roles through proactive coaching, development, and management.

o Establish a strong partnership with the other library divisions to ensure alignment of cross-divisional workflows, communication, and initiatives.

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Service

  • Serve on the Library Cabinet which is comprised of the Director and Associate/Assistant Directors.
  • Participate in library, campus, regional, and national committees as appropriate.

  • Special and Digital Collections Unit Program Lead

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in any of the following areas: Master of Library Science (MLS), Master of Librarianship, or Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited library school or program.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in academic libraries, which includes a minimum of three years of performing lead work and direct supervision of others.
  • Progressive professional academic or research library experience, including experience with or expertise in one or more of the following areas. This list of examples is meant to illustrate the type of work that each department conducts. Candidates are not required to have experience/expertise in each individual area:

o Collection development and strategies: Collection development practices, processes, and tools, library acquisitions and licensing, collection assessment methodologies and tools, interlibrary loan processes and tools.

o Discovery systems and metadata: Discovery and resource management systems, e-resources access management, cataloging and metadata processes, standards, and tools.

o Special and Digital collections: Services and programming supporting the discovery and preservation of materials, conducting outreach and instruction to support campus research and teaching, donor, and community relations.

  • Experience in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts within an academic or research library setting.
  • Experience with program development, strategic planning, or resource management within an academic or research library setting.
  • Experience in cultivating interpersonal and organizational communication to sustain a positive organizational culture within an academic or research library setting.
  • A sustained record of professional and/or scholarly activity.
  • Experience in initiating and sustaining strategic partnerships.
  • Experience in supporting employee development through team building, coaching, or mentoring activities.
  • Experience in fostering an inclusive organizational climate based upon respect, open communication, and teamwork.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • A strategic understanding of trends and issues in higher education and academic libraries.
  • Ability to effectively manage competing priorities and multiple initiatives.
  • Knowledge regarding trends and developments in library services, tools, and programming related to collection development, library acquisitions, licensing, assessment, interlibrary loan, discovery systems and access, metadata and cataloging, special and digital collections.
  • Ability to foster an environment of inclusion, trust, and teamwork.
  • Commitment to and strong record of mentoring and coaching diverse individuals and teams.
  • Exhibit effective interpersonal and intercultural communication skills in all formats with diverse audiences.
  • Commitment to and understanding of the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice and how they align with the mission of the Auraria Library and campus.

Salary and Benefits:

The base salary range for this position is $95,000-$100,000 with an additional annual administrative stipend of 10% of the base salary.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
