The NC State University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Ask Us Librarian in the Access Services department. The Access Services department (4 librarians, 22 support staff), part of the Student Success division, connects users with experts, collections, technology, and spaces. The department supports the discovery and delivery of resources, maintains the print collection in two main library locations, manages a textbook and course reserves scanning and lending service, and oversees a comprehensive technology lending service. Its resource sharing unit is well recognized for prompt and user-focused services, fulfilling numerous requests each year and contributing to the development of new and open systems such as Project ReShare. Access Services manages Ask Us, the Libraries’ integrated service point, providing answers in person and through chat, lending books and a wide variety of technology, and operating the Hill and Hunt Libraries on a 24/5 schedule, keeping them open, fun, and safe.

Responsibilities

The Ask Us Librarian provides leadership and management for Ask Us services across two main library locations, the D. H. Hill Jr. and James B. Hunt Jr. Libraries. They develop proactive services to support the academic, professional, and personal success of a large and diverse student population. The incumbent leads in directing and coordinating in-person and virtual reference services and maintains high customer service standards. They manage the textbook and course reserves service. They directly supervise at least one paraprofessional staff member and collaborate with the Associate Head, Access Services on overseeing the work of Ask Us Service Managers from all departments within the Student Success division (Access Services, Learning Spaces & Services, and User Experience), fostering a collaborative and creative work environment with strong communication. The Ask Us Librarian engages with users and analyzes and acts on feedback and library usage and reference trends. They work in close cooperation with Research Engagement, Acquisitions and Discovery, and Information Technology staff and with other public services managers and staff.  The position deeply considers how their approach to their daily work reflects and advances the Libraries’ Strategic Plan, creating an environment and community that is welcoming for both patrons and colleagues alike. This position participates in library planning and serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams. Librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. The position reports to the Associate Head, Access Services.

This position is based in North Carolina. This position is eligible for flexible hours and a hybrid work environment, based on departmental and operational needs. This position will require a majority of onsite work.
