Under the direction of the Head of Collection Management, the Archival Processing Manager oversees the development of a flexible and user-centered archival processing program for Tulane University Special Collections (TUSC). As a creative and collaborative member of TUSC’s Collection Management team, the Archival Processing Manager enhances accessioning workflows; create policies, procedures, and workflows for efficient processing; processes archival collections; designs and implements surveys and assessments to assist in understanding collection needs and prioritizing projects; and seeks technologies and opportunities for innovation in all of these endeavors. As a member of TUSC, the Archival Processing Manager embraces the division’s shared Vision, Mission, and Values, and contributes to reference, instruction, exhibitions, social media initiatives, and other programming as needed. The Archival Processing Manager will participate actively in relevant professional groups, training and development activities, and present or publish in appropriate forums and otherwise enrich their professional profile and knowledge.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- MLS from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent.
- One to two years of work experience in an archival repository, including processing and producing finding aids for archival collections, preferably of a significant size.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES TYPICALLY NEEDED TO PERFORM THIS JOB SUCCESSFULLY:
- Thorough understanding of current and emerging approaches to developing a user-driven archival processing program for special collections in an academic research library.
- Demonstrated experience applying efficient techniques in accessioning, appraising, arranging, describing, preserving, and providing access to archival collections of varying size and complexity.
- Thorough knowledge of library and archival standards and vocabularies, including EAD, DACS, MARC, RDA, and LCSH.
- Understanding of privacy, confidentiality, copyright, and use policies associated with special collections materials.
- Able to be responsive to the needs of a diverse faculty and student population and committed to fostering diversity and inclusion in the work environment.
- Demonstrated experience working with archival content management systems, such as Archon, Archivists’ Toolkit, or ArchivesSpace, and standard computer office applications such as Microsoft Office.
- Demonstrated project management experience, with an ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously.
- Knowledge of how to apply preventative conservation measures to archival collections to mitigate risk of deterioration at the macro and micro level of archival collections care.
- Knowledge of issues and methods to facilitate digitization of special collections and/or digital archives management.
- Experience supervising staff or students in a special collections setting.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and time management skills.
- A record of engagement with the profession through committee work, presentations, and/or publication, and knowledge of current and emerging trends in the special collections field.
