The UCSB Library seeks a collaborative, dynamic, service-oriented librarian to support current and emerging research strategies and methods of scholarly communication by developing collections and providing research services that support use of the California Ethnic Multicultural Archives (CEMA), the study of ethnicity and multiculturalism in regards to California, the study of California, and the study of the Latin America. The successful candidate will actively work to maximize the strength of the UCSB collection in print, electronic, and emerging formats to support faculty and students in the ethnic and gender studies departments and scholars throughout the campus who are engaged in the study of the Americas. The expected effective date of the position is December 1, 2019 or later.
Reporting to the Director of Special Research Collections (SRC), the Curator is responsible for curating the California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives, also known as CEMA. These unique collections document the lives and activities of various ethnic groups in California. The collections represent the cultural, artistic, ethnic, gender, and racial diversity that characterizes the state's population. Building on the anchor of CEMA and UCSB Library’s collection strengths in gender and ethnic studies, the Curator will also build relevant collections in California history and more broadly document the histories of Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking peoples in the Americas, advancing multi-disciplinary teaching and scholarship across geographic borders. The Curator will work with other librarians to ensure that the resources curated in CEMA reflects the rich demographic diversity of California.
Curatorial duties include: collection development and management; research consultation; instruction and other public services; digital operations; web resource development and management; intellectual control over collections; faculty liaison; security; preservation; publications; exhibitions; outreach; grant preparation and management; implements campus and UCSB Library personnel policies.
The Curator will provide leadership in directing and managing the acquisition, description, and long-term preservation of content in all formats, including print, electronic, and born digital materials. The Curator, working with the Director of SRC and the Library’s Director of Development will identify prospective donors; will identify, acquire, and oversee the processing of collections of primary sources.
The Curator will: support the needs of the ethnic and gender studies departments, faculty, and students as well as scholars across the campus and from the community interested in the study of Latin America; establish intellectual control over archives and manuscripts collections; create bibliographic access to collections by arranging and describing primary source collections according to accepted professional archival principles and practices; perform appraisals of collections to determine provenance, hierarchical relationships, organizational elements, and materials that may be confidential; be responsible for curatorial care of rare historical documents and identifies preservation treatment and/or digitization; oversee the re-formatting, appropriate storage and duplication services needed for visual materials; promote awareness and use of the collections; will direct staff and will consult as needed with other library units.
The Curator will:
Develop, implement and evaluate priorities and policies for retaining materials of historical value related to CEMA, California history and the Americas;
Manage the administration of collections, including appraisal, acquisitions, processing, reservation, and gift agreements;
Lead instruction sessions and tours, promote the use and understanding of primary sources to faculty, students, researchers, alumni, university personnel, and the public;
Provide leadership, consultation, and outreach to collection donors about managing both analog and digital records;
Identify preservation issues for analog and digital formats;
Provide research consultation assistance to scholars and students;
Prepare interpretive and informative text for finding aids, website, and promotional/public educational materials;
Serve as a subject liaison to relevant departments; develop and maintain communication with faculty;
Coordinate work of 1 FTE Library Assistant IV Archives Processing Specialist, and student staff. Train and supervise special projects and grant staff; and
Maintain effective collection donor relations.
At time of application, ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, OR at least a master’s degree in a related field with at least two years’ relevant professional experience;
At time of application at least 3 years’ professional experience processing archival collections, including digital objects; and
At time of application at least 2 years’ experience with preservation/conservation standards for a variety of formats including born digital, images, sound, moving recordings, and analog and print formats.
Ability to read and write in Spanish;
Familiarity with archival metadata standards (DACS, EAD, VRA), scholarly repository platforms and technology tools including ArchivesSpace as demonstrated through undergraduate or advanced degree coursework, or work experience; and
Experience teaching primary source literacy, including visual literacy, to undergraduate and graduate students.

Knowledge of current trends, issues, workflows, and best practices associated with digital content acquisitions and curation of special collections and archives;
Collection development experience building unique collections, and demonstrated leadership capacity to continue to grow CEMA and to build new collecting strategies targeted to expanding the scope of CEMA’s program to document other ethnic populations;
Experience working with legal and ethical issues affecting privacy, record restrictions, digital rights management, and access to special collections and archival materials;
Certification from the Society of American Archivists, Academy of Certified Archivists, California Rare Book School;
Demonstrated record of professional engagement, including service to professional organizations, presentations at conferences, and peer reviewed publications;
Prior experience serving under-represented groups;
Supervisory and management experience in a special collections and archival environment; and
Experience curating exhibitions from primary source collections.

Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Librarians at the University of California, Santa Barbara are professional academic appointees who accrue vacation at the rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per month.
